Careers - Jobs in Nhulunbuy & Remote NT - East Arnhem

Career opportunities that grow with you

Like the region, opportunities are diverse. For professionals considering a move, East Arnhem offers pathways to meaningful work, career progression, and roles that make a real impact.

While mining is a large part of the town’s history, today, our economy is broader than ever.

Tourism in the region continues to grow through locally owned and operated businesses, while well-established and emerging Aboriginal enterprises are creating exciting and meaningful opportunities.

Education and training are a big part of our community, with multiple schools, as well as campuses of Charles Darwin University and Flinders University based in Nhulunbuy. And, like many small towns, doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers are always in demand.

Many of the Northern Territory’s major government departments also have a presence here, alongside East Arnhem Regional Council, offering a variety of roles.

East Arnhem offers, not only opportunities to match your skills and interests, but a work-life balance set against the backdrop of one of Australia’s most remarkable regions. Find a role that challenges you, expands your skills, and provides pathways to advancement. Remote work experience, community engagement, and multi-industry exposure give your career a unique edge.

Grow your career while living the lifestyle you’ve been looking for.

Remote work is better supported than ever.

If you’re thinking about building a career outside the city, there are a lot of great reasons to consider a move. Major government-backed programs are designed to make it easier, more rewarding, and more sustainable.

Bringing your skills to regional, rural or remote regions means you may be eligible for financial incentives (or have your employer receive funding).

Remote Jobs & Economic Development (RJED) & Remote Australia Employment Service (RAES)

Employers can access grants to fund new positions (including wages, equipment or infrastructure) while people living regionally can access flexible, locally-relevant jobs and support to build their skills and employment potential.

RJED aims to create 3,000 new jobs over three years. RAES replaces previous remote-work programs and supports up to 40,000 job seekers across 1,200+ remote communities across Australia.

Healthcare:

Workforce Incentive Program (WIP)
If you are a medical or allied-health professional interested in working in regional or remote areas, WIP can make the move more attractive.

The program offers financial incentives for GPs, health practitioners and practices that deliver eligible services in remote locations. The Rural Advanced Skills stream also offers up to AU$21,000 per year for doctors offering advanced or emergency care.

HELP Debt Reduction Program for remote health practitioners

Under this program, eligible medical practitioners and nurse‑practitioners who live and work in rural, remote or very remote areas may get a waiver of indexation on their outstanding HELP debt.

This means the annual inflation increase to the loan is cancelled for the period you work in an eligible area.

For those who meet the criteria (including working in a rural/remote location for a required period), there may also be a reduction of accumulated HELP debt.

Education:

HELP Debt Reduction for Very Remote Teachers

A similar scheme applies for teachers and educators working in very remote areas. If you meet certain criteria, you may be eligible for a waiver of indexation or HELP‐debt reduction, after a qualifying service period.
